ART TAKES OVER – Unterwegs / In Viaggio

KERSTIN BRÄTSCH & JUDITH HOPF | QUADRILATERO DELLA MODA

Following the success of Transformation, ATO Art Takes Over launched a second edition in Milan's Quadrilatero della Moda, presenting Unterwegs ("In viaggio") with works by German artists Kerstin Brätsch and Judith Hopf in vacant Via della Spiga storefronts, viewable through the windows 24/7. Both artists critically examine contemporary digital dependence through painting, sculpture, and installation — Brätsch contributing marbled paper works, neon-lit structures with Swiss antique glass, and a stucco piece made using the 17th-century Italian marble technique with craftsman Walter Cipriani.

Judith Hopf's work uses slap-stick humor and the absurd to question power, stereotypes, and contemporary life. In Untitled (Email Lines), suspended violet, blue, and green LED strings evoked the constant flood of digital communication, while Flock of Sheep presented expressionless brutalist herbivores as a critique of today's "flexible society" where people constantly shift between jobs. In Openings, she used batik on gauzy fabrics — inspired by 18th-century colonial wallpaper — to reimagine these territories as mysterious islands inviting reflection on inner worlds beyond societal norms.
