Geometrie a mano
FOUR ARTISTS FROM LA IN CONVERSATION
Though Greenbaum and Hawkins’ paintings share a formal language, they emerge from very different journeys. Joanne Greenbaum’s paintings give form to a kind of automatic and instinctive writing translated into shapes and techniques reminiscent of Abstract Expressionism. Richard Hawkins’ works instead mark a return to painting after a decade of figurative collage, both manual and digital: the structure of Hawkins’ paintings reflects the layering of his works from the 1990s in which homoerotic desire is sublimated through form. Jim Isermann’s artworks, made using techniques of American craft traditions (tufting and quilting) share with Pae White’s work – which is also handmade using non-traditional materials such as paper and sewing thread – a similar research into the repetition of geometric shapes and an interest in Californian architecture, with unexpected results.
