ART TAKES OVER – Transformation

MONICA BONVICINI & ARIEL SCHLESINGER | VIA DELLA SPIGA

For Transformation, Art Takes Over presented works by Italian artist Monica Bonvicini and Israeli artist Ariel Schlesinger. They were presented in the windows of unused stores on Via della Spiga in Milan, in collaboration with Galleria Raffaella Cortese, Galleria Francesca and Massimo Minini, and the store owners – united around the theme of transformation.

Bonvicini's contribution reflected her ongoing focus on natural disasters as consequences of human action, shown in works like From East to West (2020) and the light-based sculpture Bent in Shape (2017), alongside other pieces exploring written language, gender, and sexuality such as Satisfy Me (2017), Belts Ball (2015), and Come on Cowboy (2020).

Ariel Schlesinger's practice reframes destruction and abandonment as opportunities for creation, turning everyday consumer products into rare, surreal objects. His Senza Titolo works (2015–2016) featured large Oriental carpets and canvases that had been rolled up, burnt over a fire, and then unfurled in the gallery as mesmerizing "paintings," while the mirror-breaking sculpture Nice to meet you (2019) revealed his ability to find creative potential in ordinary things and embrace sculpture with a striking sense of surprise.
